What's new in Service Pack 1 for BitDefender Security for Windows Servers

Summary:

The current article describes the Service Pack 1 release available for the BitDefender Security for Exchange 2007 and BitDefender Security for File Servers components of the BitDefender Security for Windows Servers suite, version 3.1.63.

Detailed description:

The above mentioned Service Pack introduces the following features and fixes:

BitDefender Security for FileServers

A. New Features

  • Windows 2008 compatibility - x86 and x64 platforms
  • Process exclusions - a list of processes that can be excluded from scanning can be defined (this option should solve compatibility issues with backup software)
  • Automatic exclusions of common server applications - Microsoft Exchange, ISA, Sharepoint
  • Optimized scanning module - the new version of the driver adds new features and speed improvements (especially on Windows 2008). Among the most important are: invalidate only one file from the cache, optimizations for copying with Windows Explorer, etc.
  • Multi Processor (kernel) aware - the number of scanning instances is configurable given the number and types of processor presents; there is an API to detect the number of processors and offer a recommended value for the number of scan instances
  • Password protection of the console - the console can now be protected by a password, that can be set and reset by any local Administrator
  • Service management in the product interface
  • Backup of the product settings file (xdb.xml) and restore tool - a backup of the xdb.xml file is done every 60 minutes. Should the file get corrupted, the user will be able to restore the last known good configuration
  • Import/Export console settings - all the settings of the product can be exported (old version didn't export all settings)
  • Full compatibility with DFS and Terminal Servers
  • Better integration with the Management Server -  Update Settings, Antivirus Settings, Exceptions Settings and Get Settings policies
  • More flexible report options - breakdown by days/weeks/months and scheduling
  • Event Level shown in the Event List - for each event in the Alerts tab, a new header in the table was added to show the level of the event
  • Changes in the Console Statistics tabs - when the statistics page is opened, the summary table will not load directly, but rather be located on a different tab; this way the waiting interval will be greatly reduced because most of the time is spent generating the Top's tables not the Summary table
  • Allow unsigned updates option for each update server - not a common one for all servers and update locations
  • Systray Window Updates - (i) when the product is opened from the Start Menu, the Systray icon will appear; (ii) the Exit option in Systray will also close the product's main console
  • DEL key Shortcut for all lists in the GUI - all the lists in the product accept the DEL key to perform the same action as the Delete button
  • Automatic Upgrade from FileServer v2.x - a tool allows the automatic update from the previous versions of the FileServer to version 3.x; this uninstalls only the components used solely by the FileServer and installs the new product instead, thus requiring just one reboot of the machine
  • Modify/Repair option
  • Modified Uninstall feature - new option to allow a user to keep the quarantined files and existing reports

B. Solved issues

  • Minor GUI Improvements: All the frames which contain objects like reports, alerts and logs, quarantine and scheduled tasks have the same size now
  • Lipc handle leak issues
  • Lipc stack and heap corruption issues
  • The console displays only the Statistics page
  • The product will block the computer when right-clicking or making any type of actions on desktop
  • The "Export Console Settings" option did not work
  • When accessing a virus over a network share, only deny worked
  • "Individual viruses found" was not reported correctly in statistics
  • On-demand scanning alert was not working (bdscand2 had a handle leak)
  • When pressing the "Help" button from the uiscan.exe interface, an error would occur
  • The console disappeared when clicking with the Help button on an Scheduled task interface
  • A dialog box remained frozen for a few seconds when pressing "Apply" or "OK"
  • File Server and Scheduler daemon versions were not displayed in About section
  • Product update status was not displayed correctly in the Monitoring section if it was a product update
  • A zip archive was not quarantined
  • BdfsTray had no description
  • An infected registry key was not counted in "Scanned registry keys summary" in the Infected section
  • In uiscan log there are files counted at remaining issues instead of resolved issues
  • Uiscan was crashing at system startup
  • Uiscan did not detect a boot virus
  • The user could extend the license period when changing the system date
  • Uiscan.exe had debug messages
  • Repair not available
  • Incorrect license status if product was expired
  • A disinfect action was logged twice
  • License issue related to computer date
  • View saved logs was not working properly
  • Email alerts were not working when we had recipients at both global recipients and per alert
  • The Info regarding the license key update should be more comprehensive
  • Console:Dashboard - The icons from the dashboard drop-down lists remained selected after being clicked
  • File log Alerts for the Report Generated were not working
  • Mail Alerts for an Update Error didn't work
  • My account was not working with the proxy from update location

BitDefender Security for Exchange 2007

A. New Features

  • Windows 2008 compatibility - x86 and x64 platforms
  • New on demand scanning - on-demand scanning through MAPI (the users can chose what mailboxes to scan; it's not dependant of VSAPI scanning)
  • Content Filtering in body - e-mails can now be filtered by the content of their body
  • Improved antispam engine - version 2.6.21 of the antispam engine is included
  • More flexible report options - breakdown by days/weeks/months and scheduling
  • Backup of the product settings file (xdb.xml) and restore tool - a backup of the xdb.xml file is done every 60 minutes. Should the file get corrupted, the user will be able to restore the last known good configuration.
  • Import/Export console settings - all the settings of the product can be exported (old version didn't export all settings)
  • Allow unsigned updates option for each update server - not a common one for all servers and update locations
  • New Management Server reports - Content Filtering Report and Attachment Filtering Report were added to the Management Server
  • DEL key Shortcut for all lists in the GUI - all the lists in the product accept the DEL key to perform the same action as the Delete button
  • Modify/Repair option
  • Modified Uninstall feature - new option to allow a user to keep the quarantined files and existing reports

B. Solved issues

  • Lipc handle leak issues
  • Lipc stack and heap corruption issues
  • Internal recipients couldn't receive their email from each other
  • On a server only with the mailbox role installed, the summary page in statistics would contain the tables for antispam, content filter and attachment filter
  • On a server only with mailbox role installed, the pie charts for antispam, content filtering and attachment filtering should not appear
  • The two tables in an on-demand scanning report (scanned objects by status and scanned objects by action taken upon) would contain information for all previous objects scanned by background scanning
  • If the properties of a periodically on-demand scheduled task were changed while the task was running, the task would not stop after the specified time
  • When the antispam filter was disabled, the global filters would be automatically disabled too
  • Activating real-time scanning should have enabled VSAPI/SMTP scanning automatically
  • A suspicious item would not be counted for the sender and for the recipients in "Top Malware Senders" and "Top Malware Recipients"
  • A disinfectable file in a zip archive would be quarantined even if it is disinfected and repacked (the AV actions for infected files are: quarantine, disinfect, delete object, ignore)
  • The Help button was not working in Registration and MyAccount wizards
  • If the checkbox from AV rule -> size was unchecked, the value for size limit was lost, it would automatically change to "0"
  • When trying to sign-in to a non existing BitDefender account, the MyAccount status from the dashboard would show: "Your account has been created!"
  • White/Black lists were not using the real sender address, they used the address from the message headers
