Skintrim debuts in BitDefender’s top ten e-threats list

BitDefender released today a list of the top ten e-threats for the month of June. Trojans continue to dominate the list, occupying five of the ten positions, including the top three

In first position is Trojan.Clicker.CM, a simple bit of adware being spread via malicious websites. Clicker is one of the most common threats of the year, owing its "success" at least in part to its ability to bypass popup blockers.

In second position comes Trojan.AutorunINF.Gen, a very widespread "family" of malware which uses the Autorun file on shared folders and removable drives to spread. This e-threat has seen a slight increase in frequency compared to last month.

Trojan.Wimad, in its various guises, occupies third spot. In fourth is an SWF exploit, although old, it probably owes this position to the large number of different viruses which still include it in their "armoury".

In fifth, Downadup.Gen, also known as Conficker or Kido, has diminished compared to last month; its heyday has surely passed.

Moving up three positions from last month’s list and into sixth place is Win32.Sality.OG, a rootkit-installing file infector.

In seventh position is a new entry to the list. Trojan.Skintrim.HTML.A poses as an Outlook add-in called MailSkinner, but is in fact a rootkit/backdoor combination which also attempts to download and install additional malware on infected machines.

In eighth, Trojan.Autorun.AET makes use of what is undoubtedly the vulnerability of the year - the Autorun bug in Windows. While in ninth, an old adware downloader has found a new lease of life - NaviPromo is the "dark half" of the infamous Navi toolbar.

In tenth position we find a generic detection for e-threats packed with NSAnti, a very popular program used by virus writers to obscure the contents of their infected files and reduce their size in transit.
