How to protect online data

“In today’s digital age, we disclose a high amount of personal information on the internet,” said Karen Carnahan, president and COO, Cintas Document Management. “It’s important to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your family from identity theft.”

Cintas gave some best practice tips for electronic data, including limiting the amount of data that is online. The company said to only put information that needs to be online there, avoiding sharing sensitive information on social media websites.

The company also advises to strengthen passwords, review website security settings, upgrade antivirus software on a regular basis and practice safe online behavior to help keep viruses away.

Direct.Gov, a U.K. website, reminded youths to use common sense and internet security on social networking websites, as the page is a public place where the safety can't really be controlled. Having important information on there without the proper precautions puts people at risk.
